About Keeping Track
Keeping Track's mission is to inspire community participation in the long-term stewardship of wildlife habitat. Keeping Track is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We teach adults and children to observe, interpret, record and monitor evidence of wildlife habitat in their communities, and we support the use of monitoring data by citizens in local and regional conservation planning. Keeping Track's focus on wide ranging mammals provides a vital indictor of the ecological health of the landscape as a whole.
Monitoring
Through the efforts of both scientists and volunteers, we identify and monitor important wildlife habitats and travel corridors. Individuals and groups gather this information using a scientifically based methodology developed by Keeping Track, Inc. involving track and sign survey techniques.
Cooperation
Our programs build community by involving people from all walks of life. Our educational efforts help to convince landowners of the value of their property for wildlife conservation.
Data Management
Keeping Track, Inc. maintains a database of monitoring information that undergoes regular quality assurance. Over time, the data set will become increasingly powerful in discerning regional patterns of wildlife use and trends in population levels.
Conservation Planning
Through a solid monitoring program, our volunteers provide land trusts, agency officials, regional planners, and local boards with information on wildlife habitat and habitat connectivity.
Education
Understanding habitat requirements for wide-ranging mammal species is crucial for conserving viable populations. We offer field workshops, track and sign survey training and school and community presentations.
