Internship Opportunities with Keeping Track

Keeping Track staff members are highly skilled naturalist educators, chief among them our Program and Research Director, Susan Morse, well-known forester and wildlife expert. We also rely heavily on a number of volunteers and interns to provide logistical and physical support both in the field and in the office. In addition, the opportunity exists for one or two highly qualified people each year to apprentice with Sue and help Keeping Track complete projects that require certain technical skills.

Each year Keeping Track has opportunities for individuals, who are seriously interested in wildlife and habitat protection, to participate in a variety of internships. These individuals provide critical assistance so that Keeping Track can more effectively offer our valuable training. Interns benefit from a thorough and rich introduction to tracking and the biology and ecology of the wildlife we monitor, and have a wonderful time in the process.

Keeping Track interns will generally spend 80% of their time in the field and 20% in the office or at events. In the field, interns will assist with field logistics: keeping everyone together; breaking trails through the snow; fitting snowshoes, etc; carry equipment such as first aid kits or extra winter clothing; and promote and assist  with the safety of the participants in a group. Interns will not be asked to teach or to lead groups as this is the sole responsibility of Keeping Track staff. For the other 20% of their time, interns will help to set up and interpret Wildlife Events in various communities, and participate occasionally in other special events including lectures and school auditorium presentations. They will also be asked to help drive to these functions or training sessions, and to assist with office work such as bulk mailing or data entry.  A valid driver's license and excellent driving record are required.

Individuals interested in internships and apprenticeships should contact Susan Morse, Keeping Track's Program and Research Director, by telephone at 802-899-2023.  An introductory letter and resume will be required of all intern candidates invited by us to join our intern staff.  All are welcome regardless of background. Join us in the field!
